McQuaid Jesuit has announced the hiring of John Serafine as director of student counseling and college advising. In this role, Serafine will look to build on McQuaid’s reputation as a highly sought after college preparatory school that guides young men to future enviable educational paths.
Serafine comes to McQuaid with more than 35 years of educational leadership experience, including 32 years in college counseling. In his most recent position as director of counseling at Fairport High School, Serafine oversaw the strategic direction and day-to-day management of one of Rochester’s largest public high schools.
“As a college preparatory school, it is our mission to graduate young men who possess the academic training as well as the personal formation to not only be college eligible, but college successful,” says McQuaid Jesuit President, Rev. Robert Reiser, S.J. “Mr. Serafine is regarded as one of Rochester’s premier college advisors, and the McQuaid community looks with great expectation to his leadership in this most important area.”
A member of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC), Serafine spent 13 years as chairperson of the Rochester National College Fair and has been a guest speaker at several NACAC conferences across the country. He is the founder of Camp College Prep, a summer program designed to support high school students pursuing college admissions as well as Upstate NY High School Athlete Showcases, a recruiting program that introduces student athletes wishing to play at the next level and enables coaches to evaluate prospective talent.
“Our counseling staff engages in the daily work of cura personalis, of caring for each of our students individually as they journey through an incredibly formative time in their lives,” says McQuaid Jesuit Principal, Adam Baber. “John’s experience and knowledge will complement this ongoing work in important ways, and I am excited to work with him.”
