Driver Education

General Information

A state-approved Driver Education course is offered at McQuaid Jesuit three times a year.Registration is open to anyone age 16 or over with a valid learner's permit. The cost for the course is $460. Successful completion of the course will result in students receiving the MV-285 Certificate of Completion certificate issued by the State of New York Education Department.

Eligibility

Students must meet the following criteria to enroll in the class:

Currently enrolled in a high school
Sixteen years old by the start of the session
Permission from parent or guardian (signed Confirmation Letter brought to first class)
Learner's Permit or Operator's License (brought to first class)
Commit to 24 hours of theory and 24 hours of driving in accordance with the attached schedule

Schedule

There will be one physical car with up to seven different road groups depending on enrollment. Each road group contains 4 students and will be on the road for at least 16 sessions. Each session lasts 60 or 90 minutes for a total of 24 hours. Road group selection will be made at time of registration. There are 16 theory classes scheduled for a total of 24 hours. ALL students must attend ALL theory classes.

Driver Education Attendance Policy: New York State requires 24 hours of classroom instruction, 18 hours of road observation and 6 hours of wheel time before a MV-285 certificate can be issued. Students need to be present for every class and their car times on the calendar to receive their certificate. In the event of class or car being canceled by the instructor the class or car will be made up at a later date before the close of the semester at the school's expense. If a student misses class or car for any other reason, a make up class will need to be scheduled with the instructor. There is an additional fee for make up classes. The fee is $40 per hour. All students must make up the class or car before the close of the semester. Where feasible, the instructor will try to coordinate students to share a make up class in an effort to spread the cost of the make up across more than one student.

Textbook

The text book, Responsible Driving, may be borrowed from McQuaid Jesuit and will be distributed during the first theory class.

Note: It is expected that all students will conduct themselves appropriately. Dismissal of a student for inappropriate behavior is completely at the discretion of the instructor.

Registration

There are 28 seats available in the Fall and Spring sessions. There are 20 seats available for each of the two Summer sessions. These seats will be filled by lottery. To be included in the lottery, please complete the online registration form no later than 8 am by the due date. Seats will be assigned by noon that day, and assignments will be posted outside the Principal's office.

Must be able to commit to all scheduled theory classes and selected road car driving schedule (Please read the complete schedule very carefully as days and times may rotate!)
There will be no refunds after registration unless the class is canceled

Summer Sessions

There will be two Summer Sessions. The first session runs from mid-June to late July. The second Session runs from late July to mid-August (about 5 weeks). Classes run Mondays through Fridays. Theory classes are held four days a week beginning at 7am. There are four driving days. Car numbers designate which days and times the car goes out. Please read the complete schedule thoroughly as days and times may rotate!

Registration Forms must be submitted no later than 8am on Friday, May 17th to Mrs. McGinn in the Principal's Office. Car Assignments will be posted by noon and Confirmation Letters mailed that day.

Payment is due by Friday, May 24th

The Fall Session generally runs from September through December (about 12 weeks). Classes run Mondays through Saturdays. Theory classes are held on Saturday mornings and one weekday afternoon. Students must attend all theory classes. The car will go out two to three times a week, once before school, once after school and on an occasional Saturday. Car numbers designate which days the car goes out. Please read the complete schedule thoroughly as days and times may rotate!
