How the Irish Saved Civilization We will read Thomas Cahills bestseller How the Irish Saved Civilization, which discusses the fall of the Roman Empire and the work of Irish monks who copied works of ancient civilization and early Christianity during the Middle Ages. Discussion topics will include: Greek and Roman philosophy, reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire, the contributions of St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Patrick of Armagh to western civilization, the medieval monastery, the church in the medieval period, and Celtic Christian spirituality. You will be required to complete an independent project. This website is designed to supplement the course material. It contains handouts given in class, as well as additional material, including extra credit assignments and links to other websites.
