What:The Urban Challenge is a week - long immersion service trip. We will live in community with other high school volunteers. Each day teams of students and adults will volunteer in the community on a variety of projects such as home repair, cleaning vacant lots and playing with children at a daycare, etc. Each evening we will have a nightly program that will include time for reflection, presentations and social time.

When:McQuaid’s Urban Challenge trip will begin early Monday, July 14 and end Saturday, July 19, 2008.

Where: The Urban Challenge takes place at the Romero Center in Camden, New Jersey. The Romero Center is a ministry of St. Joseph Pro-cathedral. The mission of the Urban Challenge is to provide the opportunity to build bridges while addressing the issues that divide us- poverty, race, class, - in a safe, prayerful environment. The Romero Center has hosted many high school service trips from across the country.

Why: The Urban Challenge provides us with the opportunity to:

  • Embody the mission of McQuaid to be “Men for Others”.
  • Learn and grow in new and profound ways.
  • Deepen friendships with fellow McQuaid students.
  • Meet new people and have fun while helping others.
  • Expand horizons by being challenged in a supportive environment.
  • Fulfill your Junior year service and theme requirements.
  • Renew your faith and have a great time in an unforgettable week!

How: To participate in the Romero Center Urban Challenge students must complete a short application stating your reasons for wanting to be a part of this trip. Initial applications can be picked up in the campus ministry office. The cost of the program will be $250 for the week. Scholarship money is available if there is financial need. Please do not let the cost of the trip deter you from participating.
