The Young Neighbors In Action Service Trip
Summer 2005

"I see myself as a better person [having] gone through this experience. I feel better about myself knowing I have helped someone in need"
-student participant

“…I realized that I was not serving the poor or homeless but [that] I was serving people…to say they are poor or homeless robs them of their dignity”
-student participant

Summary
The week of July 10 to 16, 2005 ten in-coming juniors and their leaders went to Toronto to learn about the plight of the urban poor with Young Neighbors In Action. This was a hands-on, action based learning experience for the students. The group helped out at the Good Shepard Center. The students made beds, painted the center’s food cupboard and helped prepare and serve the meals the center serves three times a day.

Young Neighbors In Action
“Young Neighbors in Action is an exciting, integrated service-learning experience for parish and school teams of older youth and adults. Young Neighbors is more than a week of service. It is an extended program that provides the experiences, skills and learning needed to make change possible.”
