ADMINISTRATION OF
MEDICATION
Prescription medication may only be
dispensed to students with written instructions from the physician. The medication must be brought into school by
the parent or guardian in the original container from the pharmacy. Any changes in dosage or medication require
additional written instructions from the physician.
Non-prescription medications
(ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cough and cold preparations, etc.) require written
permission from a parent, and the medication must be supplied from home. The student may transport a non-prescription
medication to school and turn into the Nurse’s Office. The parent permission form for administration
of a non-prescription medication may be downloaded from the link below.
Students
who will be taking medicine during the school day should be knowledgeable and
self-directed about their medication.
They should be able to name it and recognize it by color, shape and
dosage. They should be able to state why
they take their medication and the consequences of not taking it. They should be able to refuse an incorrect
medication from an authority figure.
This knowledge will enable the self-directed student while on a field
trip or similar circumstance to accept his medication when non-nursing personnel
give it.
A current
picture for identification purposes is required. Medication orders, for both prescription and
non-prescription medications must be renewed annually. At the completion of each school year, unused
medication is to be picked up by the parent or guardian.
